About the work
The year 2002 marked a shift in the direction my work was taking. For a couple of years now, I had been torn between continuing the realistic/symbolic images, or diving head-on into a more geometric/minimalist mode. While succesful and beneficial to my growth as an artist, I felt that I had reached a plateau in the style of the 'SEEd' series. That is not to say, that I will not go back to that aesthetic in the future. This was not a sudden shift however. If you care to look back, you can see how I slowly began incorporating geometrical elements into some of the prints (Deep Blue, Amino), and even branching out into full-fledged abstracts, such as Trinity III and Margo. During 2002, I began to try my hand at ceramics, metalsmithing, sculpture, and painting in an attempt to explore the language of geometric and color abstraction across different media and disciplines. For a long time, I had resisted painting for as yet unclear, internal reasons. I decided that if I was going to paint, I was going to find a way to do it in a challenging and process-oriented medium. This search brought me to encaustics. In this medium, I found a rich history, heritage, and uniqueness I felt excited about. So began the yet unnamed series of paintings, sculptures and ceramics I am currently developing. |
